(1-8) First and second couples dance the BIRL (also
known as the Bourrel)
1-4
First man and second woman set to each other, approaching, then turn
about three-quarters round with both hands. They release hands and each pivots
right about on bar
4 to finish back to back, first man facing down and second woman up. At
the same time first woman and second man dance counter clockwise round
first man and second woman to finish facing partner. Figures 1 & 2.
5-8 First and second couples set to partner and turn with both hands to finish
on own sides, second couple at the top, first couple in second place.
9-16 First couple lead down, cross over and cast up round third couple, dance up between second couple and cast off to finish facing second corners.
17-20 First couple set to and turn second corners dancing a long turn (right-about pivot) to finish back to back facing first corners. Figure 3.
21-24 First couple set to and turn first corners dancing a long turn (right-about pivot) to finish, first man between third couple facing down, first woman between second couple facing up. Figure 4.
25-30 First man dances a reel of three with third couple giving right shoulder to third man while his partner does the same with second couple giving right shoulder to second woman. First couple finish in second place on opposite sides, then
31-32 cross to second place on own sides giving the left hand.
Repeat, having passed a couple.
